Key facts · Wallpapering

Wallpapering in Bochum and the Ruhr area

The new length goes up in minutes. The hours before it decide whether it holds and whether you can see the seam.

In short

Wallpapering covers stripping old wallpaper, preparing the substrate and hanging new paper. D&E Umzüge removes the old lengths, levels the substrate, primes it and hangs woodchip, non-woven or patterned wallpaper, with a subsequent coat of paint on request.

Definition

What does wallpapering cover?

Wallpapering is the application of a new wall covering, as distinct from painting, which only renews the colour of the existing surface. It almost always includes stripping the old paper, because new lengths will not hold lastingly over a lifting or repeatedly overpainted substrate.

The time goes into the substrate rather than the hanging. Old lengths are soaked and stripped, paste residue removed, holes and cracks filled, unevenness sanded and the surface primed. Only after that can the work be done cleanly and without visible seams.

Which paper makes sense depends on the purpose. Woodchip is the standard before a handover, because it can be painted over and forgives small irregularities. Non-woven paper is more dimensionally stable and easier to remove later. Patterned papers require pattern repeat and therefore more material.

Scope of service

What is included in wallpapering?

The scope depends above all on the state of the substrate beneath the old paper.

  • Covering and masking Floors, window frames, doors and fitted units are protected before work begins.
  • Stripping old wallpaper Lengths are soaked, removed and paste residue cleared away completely.
  • Making good the substrate Holes, cracks and damaged areas are filled and sanded.
  • Priming The substrate is treated so the paper adheres evenly.
  • Cutting and pattern repeat Lengths are cut, with the pattern repeat accounted for on patterned papers.
  • Hanging Lengths are butt-jointed, pressed home and smoothed free of bubbles.
  • Openings and reveals Sockets, switches, radiator recesses and window reveals are cut in cleanly.
  • Painting on request Woodchip and paintable non-woven papers are given solid coverage afterwards.
Process

How does wallpapering work?

Wallpapering runs in four steps, with preparation taking the largest share.

  1. Survey and paper selection

The area and substrate are checked and the appropriate paper type agreed.

  2. Fixed-price quote

You receive a written quote listing stripping, substrate work and hanging separately.

  3. Preparation

Covering, stripping old lengths, filling, sanding and priming.

  4. Hanging and handover

The lengths are hung, painted on request, and the result checked together.

Use cases

Who is wallpapering for?

Wallpapering is the right choice when painting can no longer rescue the state of the wall.

Lifting or damaged paper

The old paper is lifting at the seams or has been painted over repeatedly. Painting only makes it worse.

Handover requiring paper

The tenancy agreement or the condition calls for a new wall covering rather than a coat of paint.

Before moving in

In an empty property, wallpapering is considerably faster and cheaper than working around furniture.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about wallpapering

How much does wallpapering cost?

The price depends on the area, the condition of the substrate and the type of paper chosen. The substrate has the greatest influence: if the old paper is hard to strip or the plaster is damaged, the effort rises considerably. You receive a fixed-price quote after the survey.

Does the old wallpaper have to come off?

In most cases yes, because new lengths will not hold lastingly over a lifting or repeatedly overpainted substrate. Whether papering over is possible in a given case is checked during the survey. In case of doubt, stripping is the more durable solution.

Which paper suits a handover?

Woodchip is the standard, because it can be painted over and forgives small irregularities. Non-woven paper is more dimensionally stable and easier to remove later, but costs more in material. Patterned papers rarely make sense before a handover.

What is the difference from painting work?

Wallpapering applies a new wall covering. Painting only renews the colour of the existing surface. If the existing woodchip is intact, Painting work is usually enough. If it is lifting or damaged, wallpapering is the right service.

Is the paper painted afterwards?

With woodchip and paintable non-woven papers, as a rule yes. The paint coat is listed separately in the quote. Pre-decorated papers are not painted over.

How long does wallpapering take?

One to three working days, depending on the area and the state of the substrate. Drying times have to be observed between stages, particularly after filling and priming. These cannot be shortened.

Can wallpapering be done in a furnished property?

Possible yes, sensible rarely. In an empty property it is faster, cleaner and cheaper. That is why it is usually done straight after moving out or before moving in, while the rooms are free anyway.

When is the flooring work carried out?

After the wall work, not before. Otherwise paste, filler dust and paint end up on the new floor. Details under Flooring.
