Definition

What is a senior relocation?

A senior relocation is a move tailored to the circumstances of older people. It usually leads from a large home lived in for decades into a smaller flat, a retirement residence or a care facility, and therefore almost always into considerably less space than before.

The real work happens before moving day. An entire household has to become what fits into two rooms. Those decisions take time and cannot be made in a single afternoon, least of all when relatives live far away or a hospital stay dictates the date.

D&E Umzüge therefore plans the move in stages, with one contact person and a realistic schedule. On moving day the furniture is not merely transported but assembled, unpacked and connected, so that the new home is liveable by the evening.

Scope of service

What is included in a senior relocation?

The scope depends on how much support is wanted. Every component can be booked on its own.

  • Consultation and survey A free appointment on site, together with relatives or a carer if preferred.
  • Help with sorting Going through the rooms together and deciding what comes along, goes into storage, is given away or disposed of.
  • Floor plan for the new home It is agreed in advance where each piece of furniture goes, so nothing has to be shifted on moving day.
  • Packing materials and packing The team packs completely, including crockery, pictures and keepsakes on request.
  • Transport, assembly and unpacking Furniture is dismantled, transported, rebuilt and filled again, and the bed is made up.
  • Drilling and fixing work Lamps, curtain rails, handrails and pictures are mounted in the new home.
  • Clearing the previous home Remaining household goods are cleared, passed on for reuse or disposed of properly.
  • Final cleaning and handover The former home is handed back to the landlord broom-clean or cleaned as agreed.
Process

How does a senior relocation with D&E Umzüge work?

A senior relocation with D&E Umzüge runs in five steps, deliberately with more lead time than an ordinary household move.

  1. First conversation

You describe the situation, the planned date and the size of the new home. Relatives can join by phone.

  2. An unhurried survey

D&E Umzüge walks through the rooms together with the residents, takes measurements and establishes which furniture will fit.

  3. Floor plan and fixed-price quote

You receive a plan of the new home and a written quote in which the move, the clearance and the cleaning are listed separately.

  4. Sorting and preparation

In the weeks before the move, sorting happens gradually. Whatever is not coming is stored, collected or disposed of.

  5. Moving day and setup

Furniture is assembled, boxes unpacked, lamps mounted and the bed made up. The new home is liveable that same evening.

Use cases

Who is a senior relocation for?

An accompanied move is for anyone who cannot manage a change of home alone, physically or organisationally.

Moving into a smaller home

The house has become too large. The move is above all about selecting the essentials from a whole household.

Moving into a care facility

The date is often confirmed at short notice. A room is set up while the previous home is cleared in parallel.

Relatives live far away

Children and grandchildren cannot be there. One contact person handles planning, coordination and execution.

Advantages

Why choose D&E Umzüge for a senior relocation?

A move at your own pace

The schedule follows the residents, not the other way round. Sorting happens in stages rather than in one day.

Everything from one provider

Move, household clearance, fitting work, storage and cleaning without additional contractors.

Fixed price, not an hourly rate

The price is confirmed in writing after the survey and is not adjusted afterwards.

Based in Bochum

Short travel distances across the Ruhr area and local knowledge of permits and parking.

Checklist

How do you prepare a senior relocation?

The timeline below is deliberately generous. It can be shortened when the date is already fixed.

  • 8 weeks before

Obtain the floor plan and measurements of the new home. They determine which furniture is worth considering at all.

  • 6 weeks before

Arrange the survey with D&E Umzüge and decide whether clearance and cleaning should be included.

  • 4 weeks before

Sort room by room, in short stages. Photograph keepsakes before they are passed on.

  • 3 weeks before

Prepare the address changes: post, pension, health insurance, care service, bank, newspaper and doctor.

  • 1 week before

Pack a separate bag with medication, documents, glasses, chargers and clothing for the first few days.

  • On moving day

Keep things calm: a familiar person stays present, the team assembles and unpacks, and the bed is finished first.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about senior relocation

How much does a senior relocation cost?

The price depends on floor area, the volume of belongings, the floor level and any additional services such as clearance or cleaning. D&E Umzüge issues a written fixed-price quote after a free survey, listing the move, the household clearance and the final cleaning separately.

Will the care insurance fund cover part of the cost?

Under certain conditions, German care insurance funds contribute to measures that improve the living environment. Whether that applies in your case, and to what extent, is best clarified in advance with the responsible fund. D&E Umzüge issues an itemised invoice you can submit there.

Does the team also help with sorting belongings?

Yes. On request the team walks through the rooms with you and separates what comes along, goes into storage, is given away or disposed of. This happens across several short stages rather than in a single day, because such decisions take time and are tiring.

Is the furniture assembled in the new home?

Yes. Furniture assembly, unpacking and making up the bed are part of the service. On request, lamps are mounted, curtain rails fitted and pictures hung as well, so the home is liveable that same evening.

What happens to the previous home?

On request D&E Umzüge handles the complete household clearance and the handover to the landlord. Anything usable is passed on, the rest disposed of properly, and the home handed over broom-clean or cleaned. Details under Household clearance.

Do relatives need to be present during the move?

No. The move works even when children or grandchildren live in another city. One contact person coordinates with the family by phone and documents the process. A familiar person should, however, be present for the residents.

How quickly can a senior relocation be arranged?

Four to eight weeks of lead time is ideal, because sorting takes up most of the time. If the date is fixed at short notice because of a hospital stay or a place becoming available, an express move is possible subject to availability.

Can furniture be stored if no decision has been made yet?

Yes. Pieces that no decision has been reached on are stored rather than disposed of. That leaves time to consider calmly whether something stays in the family. Details under Storage.
