What is piano transport?
Piano transport is a specialist job, because the weight and construction place particular demands on the move. An upright weighs between 200 and 350 kilograms depending on its build, a grand considerably more, and both carry that weight on a few points rather than spread evenly.
There is also the sensitivity inside. The action, soundboard and stringing react to knocks, tilting and sharp changes in temperature. An instrument carried badly or transported unsecured sounds different afterwards, without any damage being visible from outside.
D&E Umzüge therefore plans the move in advance: weight, dimensions, stairwell width, turning points and floor level determine the team size and the equipment. Where stairwells are narrow or the flat is high up, an external lift is used rather than forcing the instrument through the building.

How much does piano transport cost?
The price depends on the type and weight of the instrument, the floor levels at both addresses, the stairwell and the distance. The decisive factor is whether an external lift is needed. D&E Umzüge issues a written fixed-price quote after the survey.
What is the difference between moving an upright and a grand?
An upright travels standing. A grand is dismantled: the legs and pedal lyre come off and the body is laid on a piano skid. That makes moving a grand more involved and requires more people. Both are accounted for during the survey.
Does the piano need tuning after the move?
Usually yes, but not immediately. Waiting two to four weeks is recommended. The instrument first has to settle to the temperature and humidity at its new location. Tuned too early, it simply goes out of tune again.
How many people are needed?
At least three to four, depending on weight, floor level and stairwell. Team size is set during the survey. Too few people is the most common cause of damage to both the instrument and the stairwell.
What happens with narrow stairwells?
An external furniture lift is used and the instrument travels via a window or balcony. That is safer and often faster than forcing an instrument around tight turns. Details under the external furniture lift.
Is the instrument insured during transport?
Statutory liability applies. For valuable instruments, additional transport insurance is recommended. State the type, make and value when you enquire, so that the cover matches and the effort is planned correctly.
Where should the instrument stand at the destination?
Not directly against an external wall, not beside a radiator and not in direct sunlight. Sharp changes in temperature and humidity affect both tuning and materials. The position is discussed during the survey.
Do you transport safes and other heavy items?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Safes, aquariums, marble slabs and heavy longcase clocks also count as specialist items. Mention such items when you enquire, because they determine team size, equipment and sometimes the vehicle as well.
