Definition

What does flooring work cover?

Flooring work covers three stages: lifting and disposing of the old covering, preparing the substrate and laying the new floor. It also includes underlay, skirting boards, transition profiles and the expansion gaps required at the edges.

The decisive part is the substrate. It has to be level, dry and load-bearing, otherwise the new covering starts to move: laminate creaks over voids, click joints work loose, and vinyl telegraphs every irregularity within a short time. That is why it is checked and, where needed, filled or levelled before laying.

Sequence and waiting times are part of the trade too. Flooring follows painting and wallpapering, so that paint and filler dust do not end up on the new covering. The material itself should sit in the room for around 48 hours before laying, so it adjusts to the temperature and humidity.

Scope of service

What is included in flooring work?

  • Disposal of the old covering The lifted material is taken away and disposed of as its own waste stream.
  • Checking the substrate Levelness, moisture and load-bearing capacity are checked before laying.
  • Levelling and filling Irregularities and voids are levelled so the covering sits fully supported.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about flooring work

How much does flooring work cost?

The price depends on the area, the covering chosen and the effort required for lifting and substrate preparation. Firmly bonded old coverings and uneven substrates raise the effort considerably. D&E Umzüge issues a written fixed-price quote after measuring.

Does the old floor have to come up?

In most cases yes, particularly with carpet and bonded coverings. Whether laying over it is possible depends on build-up height, door leaves and the condition of the old covering, and is checked during the survey.

Why does the substrate matter so much?

Because the covering passes on every irregularity and every void, visibly or audibly, over time. Laminate creaks over voids, click joints work loose and vinyl telegraphs unevenness. That is why it is checked and levelled beforehand.

Which covering suits a rented property?

Laminate and vinyl are the usual compromise between cost, appearance and durability. Vinyl is less sensitive to moisture and also suits kitchens and hallways. Which covering is permitted may be governed by the tenancy agreement.

Why does the material have to sit in the room first?

So it adjusts to the temperature and humidity, usually for around 48 hours. Laid too early, the material continues to move and gaps or buckling appear. This waiting time cannot be shortened.

Is skirting included?

Yes. Skirting boards, transition and edge profiles are part of the service. The skirting also covers the expansion gap at the edge that the covering needs in order to move.

When is flooring work carried out?

After painting and wallpapering, and before the final clean. That way neither paint nor filler dust lands on the new covering, and the cleaning happens last, on the finished floor.

Is the old covering disposed of?

Yes. The lifted covering is taken away and disposed of as its own waste stream. Carpet, laminate and PVC are collected separately. Details under Disposal and clearance.
