Drilling and fixing work in your new home
The boxes are unpacked but the light fittings are still on the floor. That is usually where a move stalls.
Drilling and fixing work covers mounting light fittings, curtain rails, shelves, wall brackets, mirrors and pictures in your new home. D&E Umzüge establishes the wall construction first, selects fixings to match, and drills so that existing cables and pipes stay untouched.

What is drilling and fixing work?
Drilling and fixing work covers the mounting jobs left over after a move: hanging ceiling lights, putting up curtain rails, fixing shelves and wall units, mounting a television, hanging mirrors and pictures, and fitting anti-tip restraints to tall furniture.
What looks simple depends entirely on the wall construction. Concrete, solid brick, hollow brick, aerated concrete and plasterboard each call for different fixings and different drilling methods. A plug that holds in concrete pulls straight out of a hollow brick, and in plasterboard almost nothing holds without a cavity fixing.
Then there is what sits behind the wall. Electrical and water lines do not always run where you would expect, particularly in older buildings. D&E Umzüge therefore locates them before drilling and sets the fixing points accordingly, rather than the other way round.
What is included in drilling and fixing work?
The work is usually done straight after the move, while the team is on site anyway.
- Checking the wall construction Before drilling, the material is identified and the matching fixing selected.
- Locating services Electrical and water lines are located before any hole is drilled.
- Ceiling and wall lights Fittings are mounted and aligned, with connection work by arrangement.
- Curtain rails and poles Set level and at sufficient clearance from the wall.
- Shelves and wall units Fixed according to load, with plugs matched to the wall type and the weight.
- TV and wall brackets Brackets are mounted plumb and checked for load-bearing capacity.
- Mirrors and pictures Aligned and mounted securely with appropriate fixings.
- Anti-tip restraints and handrails Tall units are secured against tipping and handrails fixed solidly.
How does drilling and fixing work run?
The work runs in four steps and is usually finished within a day for a complete home.

Who is drilling and fixing work for?
It pays off when a lot needs doing at once after a move, or when the wall will not cooperate.
Straight after the move
Lights, rails and shelves should be done in a day rather than dragging on for weeks.
Older buildings with unclear walls
Hollow bricks and old cable runs make drilling a gamble without detection.
Safety at home
Anti-tip restraints on tall furniture and handrails, particularly with children or limited mobility.

Frequently asked questions about drilling and fixing work
How much does drilling and fixing work cost?
The price depends on the number and type of fixings and on the wall construction, since hard walls mean more effort. D&E Umzüge sets the scope from your list and states it in the written fixed-price quote. Billing is not by working time.
How do you avoid hitting cables or pipes?
Electrical and water lines are located before drilling and the fixing points set accordingly. In older buildings, services often do not follow the usual installation zones. That is why they are detected rather than guessed at.
Which fixing suits which wall?
Concrete and solid brick take standard plugs, hollow brick and aerated concrete need specialist plugs, and plasterboard needs cavity fixings. The wall construction is identified on site. The most common DIY mistake is a standard plug in a hollow wall.
Are light fittings connected as well?
Mounting the fitting is included. The electrical connection is treated separately. Details are under Connecting appliances and services. Say when you enquire whether you want mounting only or connection too.
Can anti-tip restraints be fitted?
Yes. Tall units and shelving are secured against tipping with appropriate fixings. This matters particularly in households with small children and is among the most common requests after a move.
Is the drilling dust cleared away?
Yes. Dust produced during the work is removed afterwards. As much as possible is also caught while drilling, so it does not spread through a freshly furnished home.
What about the drill holes in my old home?
Filling old drill holes counts as cosmetic repair and is commissioned separately. Whether your tenancy agreement requires it is worth checking before handover. See Painting work.
Can I book this together with the move?
Yes, and that is the norm, usually cheaper than a separate appointment. The team is on site anyway and the furniture is already in position, so fixing points can be set sensibly.
