Definition

What does connecting appliances cover?

Connecting appliances is the last stage of a move: appliances are put in position, connected to water, waste and power, and tested. That covers washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges and cookers, as well as light fittings and aerial and network outlets.

It should be distinguished from furniture assembly. Assembly concerns the furniture itself, meaning units, worktops and panels. Connection concerns appliances and services. In practice the two interlock and are usually commissioned together.

There is a clear legal boundary. Plug-in appliances and standard water connections are handled by D&E Umzüge. Gas connections and fixed electrical installation work, by contrast, may only be carried out by specialists authorised to do so. Please mention such appliances when you enquire.

Scope of service

What is included in the connection service?

The scope is agreed in advance, because it depends on the connection points available in the new home.

  • Washing machine and dryer Positioning, levelling, connecting supply and waste, removing transit bolts and a test run.
  • Dishwasher Connection to supply, waste and power, fitting into the run of units and a leak check.
  • Fridges and freezers Positioned, levelled and connected, with a note on the standing time needed before switching on.
  • Hob and oven Plug-in appliances are connected; hard-wired ones by an authorised specialist.
  • Light fittings Ceiling and wall lights are mounted and connected.
  • Media outlets Television, aerial, router and network connections are made and checked.
  • Function testing Every connected appliance is checked for function and leaks before handover.
  • Disconnection at the old address On request, appliances are properly disconnected and made ready for transport.
Process

How does the connection service run?

The connection service runs in four steps and is usually completed on moving day itself.

  1. Appliance list with your enquiry

You list the appliances to be connected, flagging gas appliances and hard-wired ones in particular.

  2. Checking the connection points

On site it is checked whether supply, waste and sockets sit where the appliances are to stand.

  3. Connecting

Appliances are positioned, levelled, connected and the joints sealed.

  4. Testing and handover

Every appliance is tested, and the result is then checked together.

Use cases

Who is the connection service for?

It makes sense when the home should be usable on moving day rather than after the next weekend.

Moving with kitchen appliances

Washing machine, dishwasher and cooker come along and should run again the same day.

A new kitchen

After the kitchen assembly the built-in appliances have to be connected and tested.

Moving without your own tools

Between boxes there is neither tooling nor time, and a leaking connection gets expensive fast.

Advantages

Why choose D&E Umzüge for connections?

Usable the same day

Connection happens straight after the move, so the home works that evening.

Everything from one provider

Move, kitchen assembly, fixing work and connections as one job rather than several appointments.

Clear boundaries

What requires an authorised specialist is stated up front rather than quietly glossed over.

Fixed price, not an hourly rate

The scope is agreed in advance from your appliance list and set out in writing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about connecting appliances

How much does the connection service cost?

The price depends on the number and type of appliances and on whether the connection points exist and are accessible. D&E Umzüge sets the scope from your appliance list and states it in the written fixed-price quote.

Do you connect gas appliances?

No. Gas connections may only be carried out by a specialist authorised to do so. The appliance is positioned and levelled, but the gas connection itself is not made. Please flag gas appliances when you enquire.

What about hard-wired electrical appliances?

Fixed electrical installation work is likewise reserved to authorised specialists. D&E Umzüge connects plug-in appliances. With hard-wired cookers, what can and cannot be done is stated in advance.

What is the difference from kitchen assembly?

Kitchen assembly concerns the furniture: units, worktops and panels. This service concerns appliances and services. The two interlock and are usually commissioned together. Details under Kitchen and furniture assembly.

Is the washing machine leak-tested?

Yes. After connection a test run is carried out, checking the supply and waste connections. The transit bolts are also removed. Left in place, they damage the machine on its first wash cycle.

When can the fridge be switched on?

After transport it should stand for a few hours before being plugged in. That allows the refrigerant to settle. The exact period is given by the manufacturer and is mentioned when the appliance is positioned.

Are light fittings mounted and connected?

Yes. Ceiling and wall lights are mounted and connected. Drilling and wall or ceiling fixings fall under Drilling and fixing work and are usually done at the same time.

Are appliances disconnected at the old address?

Yes, on request. Appliances are properly disconnected and made ready for transport. For washing machines that includes fitting the transit bolts. Where these are no longer available, the appliance is secured accordingly.
